Wyse Portable Winch Used in Helicopter Recovery
NEWS RELEASE
St. John’s, NL – January 15, 2008 – Technology that was initially created for the recreational power sport industry, has played a role in the recovery of a downed helicopter in St. John’s. The Wyse Portable Winch System, designed by CBS businessman Brian Lundrigan, was used by local search and rescue personnel to remove the wreckage for evaluation by Canada’s Transportation Safety Board.
Following the recovery of the helicopter in St. John’s, the task of determining the cause of the crash begins for Safety Board personnel. The careful removal of the crumpled helicopter from the crash site by Rovers Ground Search and Rescue Team was critical to the investigation.
“The Wyse Portable winch saved time and effort for our personnel,” stated Harry Blackmore, President of Newfoundland and Labrador Search and Rescue Association. “It is now included in the equipment we utilize for recovery operations.”
The Wyse portable design has many advantages over conventional mounted winches. The unique platform offers a single attachment point for quick setup and an integrated cable guide optimizes cable spooling. Its lightweight and compact for convenient storage but offers 2000 lbs of reliable pulling power from a 1.2hp motor. Although designed for snowmobile and ATV recovery, the Wyse Portable Winch System is being utilized for marine, military, recreation and now, search and rescue operations.
“Following the launch of our technology in 2006, we realized that the markets for our portable winch go far beyond the recovery of ATVs and snowmobiles,” stated Brian Lundrigan, Wyse President and CEO. “Newfoundland and Labrador Search and Rescue President Harry Blackmore welcomed our request to test our patented technology for use in rescue and recovery operations. Following an extensive evaluation the Wyse Portable Winch System was purchased for use by Search and Rescue teams in the province.”
The Rovers Ground Search and Rescue team wasted no time in putting their new equipment to good use with the recovery of the helicopter that crashed just off Kenmount Road in St. John's on January 10, 2008.
“This is a testament to the effectiveness and versatility of our product and confirms our confidence in its many uses beyond snowmobile recovery,” says Lundrigan.
